CURA Climate Inc. and Captura, a direct ocean carbon capture company, have announced a collaboration to test and validate Captura's bipolar membrane technology within CURA's electrochemical cement process, with initial testing showing record-low operating voltages.CURA is developing technology that electrifies limestone processing to enable up to 85% emissions reductions in cement production. The company's system uses a three-chamber electrolyzer that generates acid and base to process limestone at ambient conditions, eliminating the majority of process emissions before material enters a cement kiln. Bipolar membranes are critical components in that process, enabling efficient acid and base generation.Testing at CURA's facilities found that Captura's membranes operated at the lowest voltages of any commercially tested bipolar membranes evaluated in CURA's system to date, which the companies say translates directly to lower energy consumption and operating costs. Captura's membranes are also shipped dry from its Pasadena, California manufacturing facility, simplifying storage, handling and integration compared to conventional hydrated membranes.Captura originally developed its bipolar membrane technology for ocean-based carbon removal but has since expanded manufacturing to serve industrial applications including direct lithium extraction, desalination and long-duration energy storage. Cement production accounts for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions, with the majority stemming from the calcination of limestone.
