Sargent & Lundy Contributes to Another DOE-Funded FEED Study

By Sargent & Lundy | September 22, 2022

Sargent & Lundy will provide commercial engineering support to a front-end engineering design (FEED) study to retrofit carbon capture technology at Lehigh Hanson, Inc.’s new cement plant in Mitchell, Indiana. The FEED study is funded largely in part by the Department of Energy.

This is the firm’s second opportunity supporting a DOE-funded FEED study at a cement plant. The proposed project will capture and sequester approximately two million metric tons of CO2 per year or 95% of the CO2 emissions from the Lehigh Cement Mitchell Plant.

Study highlights:

  • Lehigh Hanson, Inc., a subsidiary of HeidelbergCement, was awarded $3.7 million by the DOE to support this study.
  • The FEED study will evaluate the cost, performance, and site-specific aspects of the Mitchell cement plant required for full-scale implementation as well as positive social, economic, and environmental benefits to the surrounding community.
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. (MHIA) is providing the carbon capture technology for the cement plant.
