Frontier commits additional $915 million to scale carbon removal industry

Frontier announced $915 million in new funding for carbon removal technologies, increasing its total commitment to $1.8 billion. The group plans to concentrate investments on a smaller number of high-potential projects and help scale technologies such as ocean alkalinity enhancement, enhanced rock weathering and direct air capture. Frontier says stronger corporate purchasing and government policies will be critical to building a carbon removal industry capable of operating at gigaton scale.

Frontier has facilitated offtakes with Arbor, a Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) company that uses waste biomass to create clean energy while removing CO2. These offtakes will enable the launch of Arbor’s first commercial facility and test the viability of a new, highly efficient BECCS approach for generating clean electricity and removing CO₂. The facility, located near Lake Charles, LA, is expected to become fully operational in 2028.

Frontier buyers will pay CarbonCapture $20.0M to permanently remove 45,500 tons of CO₂ by 2028 and Heirloom $26.6M to remove 26,900 tons of CO₂ by 2030 from its next commercial facility.
