Holcim launches industry's first carbon capture test platform to validate advanced technologies

Holcim has launched CaptureLab, the cement industry's first industrial-scale carbon capture test platform, in Martres-Tolosane, France. The 2,500-square-meter facility uses an open innovation model to allow manufacturers, startups and researchers to test and validate advanced capture technologies in real-world conditions. The platform launches with an initial pilot project in partnership with Air Liquide.

Holcim has partnered with Swedish startup Paebbl and leading general contractor Goldbeck on the first commercial-scale application of a breakthrough carbon-storing technology in an innovative Holcim concrete, which was used to build the foundations of a logistics center for a global retail giant in South Germany.

Holcim has invested in Norway-listed Capsol Technologies to support the scale-up of advanced post-combustion carbon capture as part of its decarbonization strategy. The investment targets Capsol’s hot potassium carbonate technology, which captures CO₂ from cement flue gases and is designed to improve energy efficiency and heat recovery. The partnership builds on a 2025 demonstration project at Holcim’s Dotternhausen plant in Germany and aims to accelerate the production of near-zero cement.

Holcim’s Carbon Hub project in Câmpulung, Romania, has secured a grant from the European Commission’s EU Innovation Fund, making it the first large-scale onshore CCS initiative in Eastern Europe. The project plans to capture CO₂ from cement and lime production, transport it via a newly constructed pipeline, and store it underground.

Holcim UK has appointed a new Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) Director to advance its strategy toward near-zero cement production. The role will lead Holcim’s CCUS projects and reinforce the company’s commitment to scaling carbon capture as a key pathway to net zero.

Holcim has been selected for a new grant from the European Union (EU) Innovation Fund for its breakthrough carbon capture and storage project in Martres-Tolosane, France. This grant for the CarboClearTech project brings the number of Holcim’s large-scale EU-supported carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) projects to seven, advancing the European Green Deal.

Holcim has received two awards at COP28 in Dubai for its “Carbon2Business” project in Lägerdorf, Germany, in recognition of the scalability and breakthrough innovation of its carbon capture technologies.
