PlanetWEST on Thursday introduced a mobile direct air capture system designed to reduce dangerous particulate pollution in rapidly growing Gulf cities facing rising environmental threats.

The technology, known as MIDAC, or Mobile Intelligent Direct Air Capture, integrates with vehicle radiator systems to pull in surrounding air and capture particulate matter — including Black Carbon — that contributes to severe air pollution in megacities such as Riyadh, Jeddah, Kuwait City, Doha, Manama, and Dubai.

Chris Catlin, CEO of PlanetWEST, said the system was engineered in response to the region’s rapidly deteriorating air quality, intensified by extreme heat, dust storms and fast-paced urbanization.

“The air quality crisis in many of our global cities demands innovative and scalable solutions,” Catlin said. “Our decision to focus on the Gulf States stems from the region’s unique environmental challenges and our commitment to making an immediate, positive impact where it's needed most.”

Unlike most carbon capture technologies that focus on gas removal, MIDAC targets solid carbon-based particulate matter. The company highlights Black Carbon as a particularly potent climate pollutant, with warming effects far greater than many gases when measured by mass. Captured pollutants are stored onboard for controlled disposal or recycling.

PlanetWEST says the modular system can be produced within the Gulf region, supporting local manufacturing and technical expertise. The company aims for MIDAC to help cities create cleaner micro-environments and strengthen climate resilience while improving public health.
