CO280 Solutions Inc. announced the successful completion of a carbon capture field pilot at a pulp and paper mill in the U.S. Gulf Coast, validating the use of liquid amine technology to remove biogenic CO₂ from recovery boiler stack emissions.

The pilot used SLB Capturi’s Mobile Test Unit, which operated for more than 4,000 hours after being installed at the mill in the third quarter of 2024. The unit achieved a consistent 95% capture efficiency and met all key performance indicators, including energy use, solvent durability and absorber emissions. SLB Capturi’s system has a design capacity of 3 tonnes per day.

“This critical milestone clears the way for deploying commercial-scale carbon capture and removal projects at pulp and paper mills,” said Jonathan Rhone, co-founder and CEO of CO280. “The success of the MTU pilot with SLB Capturi marks a critical step toward delivering low-cost, low-risk CDR to our customers.”

CO280 develops carbon removal projects by retrofitting pulp and paper mills with modular carbon capture units that permanently store biogenic CO₂. The company selects commercially proven technologies such as SLB Capturi’s post-combustion amine systems, which have been deployed across multiple industrial sectors.

Egil Fagerland, CEO of SLB Capturi, said the results confirm the technology’s readiness for commercial deployment. “The strong performance of the MTU validates all key process parameters and demonstrates that there are no technical barriers to deploying commercial-scale carbon capture plants,” he said.

North America’s pulp and paper sector produces more than 100 million tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually. CO280 is developing over 10 carbon capture projects at mills in the U.S. Gulf Coast and Canada, with several expected to deliver carbon removal by 2030. The company awarded FEED contracts for a Gulf Coast project in 2024 and initiated Pre-FEED work for a Canadian project earlier this year.
