The Canadian and Alberta governments have announced plans to advance a proposed west coast oil pipeline alongside the Pathways Project carbon capture initiative, aiming to expand energy exports while reducing emissions from oil sands production.

The proposed pipeline, which would transport up to one million barrels of oil per day to global markets, has been referred to Canada's Major Projects Office for review as a potential national interest project. The route is expected to largely follow the existing Trans Mountain corridor, with the federal and Alberta governments sharing ownership and reserving an equity stake for Indigenous communities.

At the same time, Canada, Alberta and the Oil Sands Alliance reached an agreement to move forward with the Pathways Project, a large-scale carbon capture and storage initiative expected to reduce emissions by approximately 16 million metric tons annually. The project is intended to lower the carbon intensity of Alberta's oil production while supporting the country's broader emissions reduction goals.

Officials estimate the combined projects will create about 175,000 jobs across Canada, including roughly 140,000 tied to the pipeline and more than 40,000 annually through the Pathways Project. The initiatives are also expected to attract more than $200 billion in investment while expanding access to international energy markets.

The announcements build on a series of Canada-Alberta agreements reached since late 2025 to streamline approvals for major infrastructure projects, reduce methane emissions and advance investment in energy development.
