Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and managed by Southern Company, the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC) is a premier research facility dedicated to advancing cost-effective carbon management technologies. Since its establishment in 2009, the NCCC has bridged the gap between laboratory research and large-scale demonstrations by evaluating early-stage carbon capture, conversion and removal processes for future commercial deployment. Located at Alabama Power’s Plant E.C. Gaston in Wilsonville, Alabama, the NCCC offers a flexible applied R&D test facility with commercially representative flue gas and essential infrastructure, enabling technology developers to test their innovations under realistic conditions. This unique facility, available to both domestic and international developers, minimizes redundancy and maximizes R&D funds. Initially focused on post-combustion carbon capture, gasification, and pre-combustion carbon capture, the NCCC now concentrates on post-combustion technologies for carbon capture, as well as carbon conversion, and removal technologies It provides flue gas from a natural gas boiler and a supercritical pulverized coal unit, with fully integrated solvent units and test bays for pilot-, bench- and lab-scale technologies. The NCCC has collaborated with over 60 organizations from seven countries, hosted technology developers from around the world and tested more than 85 emerging technologies. With over 160,000 hours of testing, the NCCC has achieved significant advancements, reducing the projected cost of CO₂ capture from fossil-based power generation by over 40%. Additionally, 15 technologies have been confidently scaled to larger deployments, several to commercial scale, based on the validation and experience gained at the NCCC. The center continues to focus on reducing costs and supporting transformational carbon reduction approaches.
